Zero Waste Week 2019, Dubai, UAE - Fair Trade Ethical Living with Sabeena Ahmed

 Zero Waste Week 2019

This is my humble effort to reduce my plastic consumption and waste for Zero Waste Week 2019, Dubai and the United Arab Emirates.

Day 1

Day 1 of #ZeroWasteWeek, I'm sharing and supporting a fantastic social enterprise called #ENABLE.

Many thanks to my husband for purchasing an ethical b'day gift this year.

Any advice from gardeners regarding how to keep my succulent alive would be appreciated?

About ENABLE

ENABLE is a UAE National social enterprise based in Dubai.

Enable empowers special young Emiratis with cognitive disabilities by enrolling them in extensive entrepreneurial program.

The skill set delivered will hopefully "enable" individuals with such special abilities to start their own retail units and therefore achieve individual financial sustainability.

We offer beautiful indoor plant arrangements using quality #succulents and #cacti sourced from national and international well-known suppliers.

As a social enterprise, 100% of ENABLE products will be used to fuel its retail operations with 15% of each product sold will go back to the employee who created it to empower their abilities.

 Day 2

In an attempt to remove plastic from my weekly laundry I have decided to use soap nuts instead of laundry powder.

I hope to find an alternative brand where I can refill laundry softener/conditioner or learn to make my own.

Soap nuts are Organic Laundry Detergent.
They are 100% Natural and Biodegradable.

Instructions:

Use 5-7 soap berries for a full load of washing.

Place the bag and berries directly in the washing machine with all your laundry.

Soap berries can be re-used 5-6 times and then disposed preferably in a  composter.

Soap berres do not produce much foam.

Use warm water for washing clothes or soak the bag with berries before placing in the washing machine.

Day 3

This long black kurta of the last items of clothing my beloved mother purchased for me before she returned to her maker.

I just don't have the heart to give it away.

I have worn this dress as part of the Six Items Challenge with Labour Behind the Label for the past two years and hope to endorse the Love Your Clothes Campaign advocated by WRAP UK.

About Zero Waste Week

Zero Waste week was founded by Rachelle Strauss in 2008 and began as a National UK Campaign.Campaigns last a week and take place annually during the first full week in September.

The campaign runs predominantly on social media and the website ZeroWasteWeek to reach a community of like-minded people who want to reduce residential or commercial waste, reuse materials and recycle as much as possible. The aim of the campaign is to help householders, businesses, schools and community groups increase recycling, reduce landfill waste and participate in the circular economy – in alignment with European recommendations and Directives.
