Up-cycling From Green Ideas To Starting A Business - Living in Minca

This month I completed the online MOOC, Up-cycling From Green Ideas to Starting a Business - Living in Minca.

It is a dream to design my own slow fashion and accessory label using up-cycled and sustainable materials.

The course was an informative and has motivated me to think about my up-cycling approach and how I need to brush up on my sewing and embroidery skills.

I hope to up-cycle my wardrobe and connect with some of the up-cycled makers and businesses featured in the course.

Summary and Introduction

As nations and cities urbanize, develop economically, and grow in terms of population, the World Bank estimates that waste generation will increase from 2.01 billion tonnes in 2020 to 3.40 billion tonnes in 2050. At least 33% of this waste is mismanaged globally today through open dumping or burning.

How can you turn an upcycling idea into action? This course is a must for anyone who wants to learn about upcycling and or launch an upcycling business.

Over the next three weeks, you will learn about the concept of upcycling, identify the environmental problem your idea is trying to solve, design your venture model and prepare to take it to the market. You will also learn how to make things out of trash. We have brought examples of upcycling businesses from all over the world. Successful Entrepreneurs will give you advice and recommendations on how to develop your own upcycling business idea and you will have the opportunity to pitch for mentoring support from our experts.

What topics will you cover?

  • Environmental problems
  • Sustainable Development Goals
  • Upcycling versus Recycling
  • The Circular and the Linear Economy
  • Idea validation
  • Business models for upcycling businesses
  • Tools to develop a business model
  • Building a team

This year the Fairtrade Foundation UK's campaign is all about the women, who grow the cocoa in the chocolate. The hashtag is #SHEDESERVES.

I was so pleased to learn about the House of Commons UK also supports Fairtrade Fortnight 2020.

£1.86* is the amount a cocoa farmer in West Africa needs to earn each day in order to achieve a living income.

Currently, a typical cocoa farmer in Cote d’Ivoire lives on around 74p** a day. Almost all cocoa farmers in West Africa live in poverty.

Ramadan and Eid Mubarak to all my friends, family and fairtrade producers around the world!

This is my blog summarising my effort to support fairtrade producers and artisans during the blessed month of Ramadan and Eid ul Fitr 2023.

This year my right shoulder has been very painful and prevented me from creating vlogs and blogs about Fair Trade in Islam.

On a positive note I tried to post a fair trade product every day during Ramadan and Eid ul Fitr 2023 with translations in English and Urdu.

Apologies in advance for any errors in the Urdu translation.
