After 8 long years of grief and ongoing healing, my sister and I decided to seek the services of The Muslim Bereavement Support Service located in Chingford, London.

This was a sisters only workshop.

We reserved our places to attend the Free Art Therapy Workshop, because talking about grief is not for everyone.

During the workshop which was 3 hours long we listened to a presentation about grief from an Islamic perspective and completed some artwork.

Some sisters were comfortable to talk about their loved ones while others were happy to complete the intricate artwork.

My paper heart says 'ease' is dedicated to my beloved parents

By the end of the workshop, my sister and I had completed a few book marks and a paper heart each.

The purpose of this workshop was to give those grieving an opportunity to share their experiences of loss, grief and strengthen their journey of connecting with Allah subhana wa'tala.

Yes! There were many tears and hugs!

Many thanks and dua'as (prayers) for sisters Farhana, Sofia and Nafisa for organising this workshop and laying out refreshments.

My dua'as for all those participating, May Allah Subhana wa'tala make it easy for your hearts and bless loved ones with a beautiful seat in Jannat-ul-Ferdose. Aaameen!

اردو میں ترجمہ

آٹھ سال کے طویل غم کے بعد، میں اور میری بہن نے چنگفورڈ، لندن میں واقع مسلم بیریومنٹ سپورٹ سروس کی خدمات حاصل کرنے کا فیصلہ کیا۔

یہ صرف بہنوں کی ورکشاپ تھی۔

ہم نے فری آرٹ تھیراپی ورکشاپ میں شرکت کے لیے اپنی جگہیں محفوظ کیں، کیونکہ غم کے بارے میں بات کرنا ہر کسی کے بس کی بات نہیں ہے۔

تین گھنٹے طویل ورکشاپ کے دوران ہم نے اسلامی نقطہ نظر سے غم کے بارے میں ایک پریزنٹیشن سنی اور کچھ آرٹ ورک مکمل کیا۔

کچھ بہنیں اپنے پیاروں کے بارے میں بات کرنے میں آرام سے تھیں جبکہ دیگر پیچیدہ آرٹ ورک کو مکمل کرنے پر خوش تھیں۔

ورکشاپ کے اختتام تک، میں اور میری بہن نے کتاب کے چند نمبر اور ایک ایک پیپر ہارٹ مکمل کر لیا تھا۔

اس ورکشاپ کا مقصد غم زدہ افراد کو اپنے نقصانات، غم کے تجربات سے آگاہ کرنے اور اللہ سبحان وتعالیٰ سے جڑنے کے اپنے سفر کو مضبوط کرنے کا موقع فراہم کرنا تھا۔

جی ہاں! بہت سے آنسو بہائے اور بہنوں نے ایک دوسرے کو گلے لگایا

میں اس موقع پر بہنوں فرحانہ، صوفیہ اور نفیسہ کا شکریہ ادا کرنے اور اس ورکشاپ کو منعقد کرنے اور ریفریشمنٹ دینے کے لیے دعا کرنا چاہونگی۔

تمام شرکت کرنے والوں کے لیے میری دعا، اللہ سبحانہ و تعالیٰ آپ کے دلوں کے لیے آسانیاں پیدا فرمائے اور اپنے پیاروں کو جنت الفردوس میں جگہ عطا فرمائے۔ آمین!

The Muslim Bereavement Support Service

The Muslim Bereavement Support Service is a registered charity, founded in 2012. We are a non-profit organisation serving the Muslim community by supporting bereaved women who have lost a loved one.

We also work with other organisations, the NHS and hospices in particular, to give a spiritual context to the bereavement support services they offer.

Losing a loved one is an extremely painful experience and the range of feelings and emotions as well as physical reactions can be very confusing and further upsetting. For this reason we aim to help in any way we can during this difficult time. Our confidential service is provided by trained volunteers.

I appreciate and acknowledge their efforts to support a nurturing and developing a grief support service for bereaved individuals in London.

May Allah subhana wa'tala bless them for all their efforts, Aameen!

1. As a registered disabled individual, a three hour session was far too long.

I found it painful and difficult to sit and had to stretch my legs many times during the session.

I feel the 3 hour session could have been condensed to a 1 and half hours.

2. Communication via email was non existent.

My email to the MBSS team to attend the workshop was never answered, there was no mobile phone number contact I could call.

3. A location map and address was not provided on the original workshop poster.

The absence of these details caused a huge amount of confusion for us. My sister and I arrived at the Children's cemetery instead of the Gardens of Peace building.

4. A one to one grief session should have been optional choice for those sisters who wished to talk about their grief in an private and in a confidential setting.

An option to book a session to speak to qualified team member after the workshop could have been useful and beneficial for many sisters who were recently bereaved.

5. A question about dietary requirements should have been sent to all participants before the workshop.

As an individual who is gluten, dairy and lactose intolerant, there were no refreshments I could eat.

I would like to end this blog my thanking everyone involved in organising the Art Therapy Grief Workshop.

4. ایک سے ایک غم کا سیشن ان بہنوں کے لیے اختیاری انتخاب ہونا چاہیے تھا جو اپنے غم کے بارے میں نجی اور خفیہ ماحول میں بات کرنا چاہتی ہیں۔

ورکشاپ کے بعد اہل ٹیم ممبر سے بات کرنے کے لیے سیشن بک کرنے کا آپشن بہت سی بہنوں کے لیے مفید اور فائدہ مند ثابت ہو سکتا تھا جو حال ہی میں سوگوار ہوئیں۔

5. غذائی ضروریات کے بارے میں سوالات ورکشاپ سے پہلے تمام شرکاء کو بھیجے جانے چاہئیں۔
