WFTO member Fair Trade Egypt Crafts (FTE) empowers local communities by offering disadvantaged artisans in Egypt an opportunity to market and develop their craft. Ishak Fahim Rubel, one of the founding members of the Brass Group, explains how the organisation developed and how they participate in a Fair Trade partnership. ‘I am a master jeweller and tanner at Embaba’s Brass Group. I learned leather tanning and brass embossing from one of Cairo’s better-known masters, Sami Amin. After spending five years in his workshop, I felt I could launch my own operation with my own designs.’

The Lisu are direct descendants of the indigenous semi-nomadic tribes of Tibet. Over the last 300 years or so for political and survival reasons many have chosen to migrate to Thailand where they sustain a living through handicrafts. Marcela Cofre and her husband supported their family by making women's shoes until 1994 when the market for shoes dropped dramatically as cheaper imports flooded the market. After dabbling in various types of crafts, Marcela found a particular talent for glass making, building a sustainable business to support her family as well as the families of others who she has trained to help make glass products.
