The Hegaza Wooden Craft Project began in the mid-eighties when a French Bishop taught workers among others, the art of carving wood. The Bishop taught in the hope that the young men in the area would be given the opportunity to learn a distinctive trade and secure a means of generating income. Apprentices in their mid-to-late teens participate in an intensive three-year vocational training where they master this manual skill. After they have successfully completed their training, these men are responsible for educating the next generation of young men.
