Central Oxford was bustling with Christmas cheer and I popped into the St Michael Fair Trade Shop for a chat.

I am very grateful to Clare for taking time out her busy day to conduct this interview with me.

ABOUT FAIRTRADE AT ST MICHAEL'S

Established 2003, Fair Trade at St. Michael's is a beautiful unique fair trade shop located in the basement of ST Michael's Church, central Oxford. It is a  member of the British Association for Fair Trade Shops (BAFTS).

All the products are fair trade certified which means that disadvantaged farmers, artisans and communities are receiving a guaranteed fair wage and social premiums.

The shop is brimming with authentic fair trade products supporting over 60 producers. When I visited with my sister Irem we enthusiastically browsed the jewellery, home accessories, ceramics, and chocolate shelves.

We purchased many unique fair trade gifts but I particularly liked my butterfly earrings supporting artisans in India.

I had a fantastic time visiting the beautiful fair trade shop and hope to return soon.

My sister and I also had the good fortune to have lunch with Maranda.

Maranda st John Nicolle is co founder of the Oxford Coalition Fair Trade team.

About the Oxford Coalition Fair Trade Team

It is a loose coalition of organisations and individuals involved in various aspects of fair trade who work to promote awareness of Fairtrade in Oxford.

You can contact the team by e-mail:  fairtrade@oxford.gov.uk

We team meet regularly at Oxford Town Hall and new members are always welcome.

Oxford became a Fair Trade City in 2004.

This means that the Fairtrade Foundation was satisfied that it had achieved the five criteria required to qualify as a Fairtrade Town (or City). They are:

1. Local council passes a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and agrees to serve Fairtrade products (for example, in meetings, offices and canteens).

2. A range of Fairtrade products are readily available in the area’s retail outlets (shops, supermarkets, newsagents and petrol stations) and served in local catering outlets (cafés, restaurants, pubs).

3. Local workplaces and community organisations (places of worship, schools, universities, colleges and other community organisations) support Fairtrade and use Fairtrade products whenever possible.

4. Media coverage and events raise awareness and understanding of Fairtrade across the community.

5. A local Fairtrade steering group is convened to ensure the Fairtrade Town campaign continues to develop and gain new support.
